Ghostcrawler (lead systems designer) hit the official forums earlier today to give a very in-depth look at the intricacies behind Cataclysm's hit rating philosophy, the nature of characters getting "more powerful," and the way boss levels actually work. All in all, it's a very interesting read.

Essentially, bosses will get more powerful as the raid tiers grow in number, requiring players to attain new hit levels to stay hit-capped. The bosses are, in essence, getting stronger as you also grow in strength, which makes perfect sense. It's also very nice to see Ghostcrawler having a really excellent discussion about this subject with players, considering hit is a really weird and convoluted stat to begin with. Hopefully, with Cataclysm's new tooltip features and hit rating helpers, the mysteries behind hit rating will be less challenging for most players. Check out Ghostcrawler's posts behind the jump.

You're too focused on hit alone.

This piece of gear wouldn't exist, but to save me from having to make three versions, consider this series of boots:

Level 83 quest blues with 10 attack power, 10 Stamina, 10 crit, 10 hit, 10 parry.
Level 85 quest blues with 12 attack power, 12 Stamina, 12 crit, 12 hit, 12 parry.
Level 85 tier 1 raid with 14 attack power, 14 Stamina, 14 crit, 14 hit, 14 parry.
Level 85 tier 2 raid with 16 attack power, 16 Stamina, 16 crit, 16 hit, 16 parry.

When yo go from level 83 to level 85 you stay at the same amount of power relative to creatures. Why? Because the creatures are gaining levels. Their health goes up, so you need that extra AP. Their damage goes up, so you need that extra health. Your chance to crit and hit and parry them goes down, so you need those stats as well.

So far, so good.

When you start raiding, the bosses are level 88. This makes them a little harder to hit and everything, so you need that extra budget on your gear to keep up. Still not a problem.

Now let's look at the final piece of gear. You're going from a tier 1 raid to a tier 2 raid. The boss hits harder so you need that health. The boss has more health, so you need that attack power. But the boss is still level 88 like he was in tier 1. This means you crit him more than the previous boss, because your crit went up. You do more damage to the harder boss than to the easier boss. You also hit him more (unless you're hit capped, which you probably are) and you parry him more.

We solved, in an awkward way, the parry problem in Icecrown by putting a debuff on you. That basically allowed the creatures to scale with your gear. We couldn't solve the crit or hit problems, so players just became more and more powerful and eventually capped those stats (or got close to it in the case of crit). Just as players are often very worried (and sometimes rightfully so) about not scaling with gear, the bosses were not scaling with your gear. All of those problems that can happen to players when their damage (or healing or tanking) don't scale were happening to the bosses. You were scaling too well with crit, hit and parry.

A different way to go would be that the tier 2 raid boss is actually level 89 or 90 instead of level 88. Then you'd naturally need more crit and hit and parry to face him. That makes intuitive sense, but it does some weird things to our game because creature levels were never intended to be used that way. For example, the boss would get crushing blows and resists. Even worse, it does weird things to the next tier of content. If Deathwing at the end of Cataclysm (spoiler!) is a level 93 boss, then what is the first boss at the end of the next expansion? Level 93? Level 90? Level 96?

Instead, we are just faking the bosses gaining levels. We haven't worked out the exact mechanic yet, but imagine they are level 88++ or level 88.3 or level 88 SKULL SKULL BAD SKULL. As you get more powerful and get better gear, they get more powerful... exactly like all those bosses you handled while leveling up. Rather than critting and hitting the more dangerous opponents more often, your relative power stays about the same. You scale.

Quote:

That goes straight to customer satisfaction and longevity of the game. The more you play, the more powerful you should become. Not the weaker.

You do get more powerful. You get more powerful in an absolute sense, but not in a relative sense, because the challenges you can face become more powerful too. It is a fundamental pillar of RPG design othat as you get more powerful, you are able to handle more powerful opponents. Games lose their steam pretty quickly if you become more powerful and just use that power to steamroll the same weak opponents. Where is the glory in that?
Quote:

Hit will never be an interesting stat as long as there's a hard cap on it.

I know this is an old argument, but this is *why* we think hit is an interesting stat. If you could just stack hit forever, you probably would, because it's a very good stat. Some of the biggest decisions to be made about gearing come when you have to engineer enough but not too much of this one stat so that you can focus on the others. We want you to look at stats other than just ilevel. Otherwise, we might as well just give all the armor and weapons a power stat, and you just pick whichever has the most power. Hit keeps you from just stacking your best stat. Maybe it doesn't add a ton of depth to say "stack hit, then stack your best stat" but it does add some. WoW better: moments in life

by Michael Gray Sep 21st 2010 at 12: 00 is an odd movie moments in life. A person is in the city stay and try to do something with his time to find. First, the man meets a priest who abused him in public. Then he comes to a Tauren woman. The man feels forced to select a fight with the Tauren, the lose your mind then fully and beats him up. The human parks his behind the affliction where he can if a night bubbles Elf woman offers to help. There is a faster cut and then we find out they spent the night together.

I don't really know what you to make the video. I think we can definitely see the eartags Romire's attempts to improve his skills. There are some places where I ask myself, or artistic decisions that were made when the animation a little shaky but overall the animation was pretty smooth. The script choppy me and felt a little übertrieben.Nicht absolutely my favorite piece ever, but I think moments in life shows promise for the future.

Breakfast topic: better off tank be?

by Henry Phillips Sep 19th 2010 at 8: 00 pm this breakfast has topic was brought to you by seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to our pages.

The most tanks (and aspiring tanks) want the main tank raided sein.Es is on this prestigious player shoulders that the success or failure often applies the RAID to rest.

Screw.

First, we know that stereotype is untrue.Healer and DPS both important roles in RAID, I play although they are sometimes forced to their importance to argumentieren.Aber not often hear praise for the off tanks. During the healers who heal DPS damage and the main fuel tanks, these "wannabe main tanks" play critical roles in almost every fight. If you have to pick up adds or parts of the load the boss, with the main tank soil moisture, these intrepid Heroes have you, work just as hard to keep alive the RAID.

I tasted first off soil moisture back in Naxxramas (10 man), when I stepped on the task as one of the rear tanks on my elemental shaman during the four horsemen fighting. Here I got my first taste of pleasure of adapt my skill set to new situations for each fight.I wanted to be the one which the zombies on Gluth, kite, mine would shaman but lacked the ability, and one of our magician shoulders the responsibility. You can, however, that I always there again to support was insured setting my Stoneclaw Totem.

My Guild fell apart for a while, after Ulduar was published, and I too bad for more WoW war.sobald I arm anymore, I leveled a feral Druid, and we all came together recently and began, attacked Eiskrone.Jetzt I am off tank and I it loving bin.Wird an off tank lets me flex and show how creative and adaptable am.

Lichborne: What has changed for death Knight in the patch 4.0.1

Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request
Translate Request has too much data
Parameter name: request
by Daniel Whitcomb Sep 21st 2010 at 9:00PM

Welcome to Lichborne, your weekly source for news, guides, tips and opinions on the death knight class.

With the 4.0.1 PTR in full swing, it's time to face the inevitable fact: This patch will show up on the live servers, probably sooner rather than later, and everything you know about how to play your death knight will change forever. OK, so it's probably not that drastic, but there's still a lot of stuff that is changing, and it's definitely worth going over so you know what to expect when the patch goes live.

The biggest thing to keep in mind as you try things out is not to panic. Things are going to be a little chaotic for a while as we figure out and finalize new rotations and strategies. In addition, remember that Blizzard's balanced our new trees with an eye on level 85. This means that some stuff may be wonky at level 80 but will smooth out at level 85, as we get new itemization and face new classes of enemies. In other words, don't panic. Do give feedback, but don't assume everything is broken because you're slightly over- or underpowered at level 80. With that in mind, let's do a quick review of some of the major playstyle changes.

Mastering the new rune system

One the biggest changes to the death knight class is the completely new rune system. We covered a bit back when it was first announced, but let's go over it again.

Essentially, the way runes regenerate has been changed completely. Now, instead of each rune regenerating independently, the second rune of each type will only regenerate if the first one is full. Essentially, imagine that you now have three separate energy bars -- unholy, frost and blood -- that fill up gradually. If it feels a little confusing, don't worry, you're not alone. It makes more sense once you've had a chance to play with it on the PTR or the beta.

The other major rune system change to get used to is Runic Empowerment. If you're keeping up with a good solid rotation, this little skill will change things up a bit by refreshing a random rune on you. Now, the problem here is that it's only one rune, and you will never know whether it will be frost, blood or unholy that will refresh. The debate on how to use those procced runes is still ongoing among the beta death knight community, with two major arguments. One says that you should simply saved the procced rune until you can use it to get off a two-rune strike such as Obliterate. Others say that you should use it as soon as it comes, even if that means dropping a simple Plague Strike or Icy Touch. The former idea risks wasting the proc as other runes refresh back to their normal state anyway, while the latter arguably turns the death knight rotation in a somewhat annoying game of whack-a-mole, leaving your disease timers in disarray and making it easy to become imbalanced and forget your rotation altogether.

Note that unholy gets a talent, Runic Corruption, that will remove Runic Empowerment and replace it with a proc that simply increases your rune regeneration rate, so unholy itself won't have to worry about this so much. Frost and blood, however, should definitely use patch 4.0.1 as a time to get used to this mechanic

One other thing these two changes do is make it a lot more useful than ever to get a decent rune UI that will show the new changes in more detail and allow you to move the rune UI so you aren't constantly glancing at your character portrait to figure out what runes are still refreshing and what runic empowerment filled out. Expect a look at those in a future column as more addon artists update their mods for 4.0.1.

Talent tree changes and masteries

All three talent trees are seeing at least some changes to their playstyle. Many passive talents have been removed, but more importantly, the basic philosophy of the trees has changed. You'll have a lot to get used to, no matter what you play. In addition, the new talent tree system means you'll need to pick a single tree as your "main" tree. You'll get some new abilities when you do, and you'll be forced to spend 31 points in that tree before you grab spare points elsewhere. While we've covered a lot of what's happened to them in the past few weeks, here's a refresher on that for you as well.

Blood

Blood's big change is that it is now the exclusive tank tree. You aren't going to be DPSing in this tree anymore. While it will likely to be useful for leveling, if you're serious about contributing to a raid or even a dungeon run, you will need to switch to frost or unholy.

The other thing to remember about blood is that Death Strike is more important than ever for tanking, since it ties in with the Blood Shield mastery, providing even more protection for each Death Strike. In fact, you may find yourself eschewing Heart Strike to use it on boss fights for extra survivability. Consider it (even more than before) the death knight version of block.

Frost

Frost's priority system isn't horribly different from what it was on live, other than Runic Empowerment. The big thing to remember is that Howling Blast now costs only a single frost rune and isn't affected by Killing Machine, while Obliterate now is. That probably means you'll be sticking primarily to Obliterate on single-target fights now. It is true that Howling Blast was proving more bang for the buck at level 80 before the latest beta patch, but the Obliterate buffs should help that.

In addition, Frost is once again viable for two-handed weapon DPS. Simply grab the Might of the Frozen Wastes talent, and you'll be good to go. Mostly, two-handed DPS is going to revolve around getting more Frost Strikes out, thanks to superior runic power regeneration. Right now, reports suggest that is in fact working, so frost-heads should be feel to grab that spare two-handed weapon out of the bank and go to town, if they so desire.

Unholy

Unholy's the tree that's probably seen the most changes in Cataclysm. The first and possibly biggest change is the fact that Scourge Strike now costs only a single unholy rune. In order to balance out the orphaned frost runes this change created, Blizzard created Festering Strike, which uses a frost and blood rune. In essence, unholy has inherited blood's old one-rune strike rotation, although with a slightly different configuration. There's also a sort of annoying little nagging blood rune that you have to Blood Strike out every time you reapply diseases unless you use Outbreak to apply or reapply (which is, incidentally, something you will not be doing until Cataclysm, as the skill is level 81). Luckily, Festering Strike applies an extra 6 seconds of disease uptime every time you use it, so you may find that you won't need to worry about that as much as you'd think.

It's also worth noting that while Lead Systems Designer Ghostcrawler has confirmed that unholy is meant to use two-handed weapons exclusively, changes to the system such as the addition of Sudden Doom to the unholy tree have caused dual wield unholy to do very competitive DPS, in some cases eclipsing two-handed DPS. It seems likely, though, that Blizzard will eventually nerf that, so don't get too comfortable with dual-wielding in the unholy tree.
We have advice for everything from PUG etiquette and buttons you should push more often to Icecrown loot and gear stat weights. Cataclysm: Revised justice point conversion

by Robin Torres Sep 29th 2010 at 12: 30 pm Blizzard has updated the currency conversion rates to make agriculture more lucrative instances before cataclysm. The new following conversion rates effective in 4.0.1 Patch: Emblems of triumph 11.58 justice = points (up from 2.75) emblems of frost 11.58 justice = points (up from 2.75) justice Cap 4,000 points (about 345 emblems) = justice = points about CAP each 47.5 Silver for patch 4.0.3 (compared with 2 Gold) are the full instructions from Blizzard after the break. BashiokWe have justice points conversion rate for emblems of triumph and the Frost revised emblems. When the upcoming 4.0.1 patch live, these emblems justice points are converted into 11.58 (up from the previously scheduled 2.75 justice points per emblem). Justice points, the accumulated above the soft CAP are converted from 4,000 to gold at a rate of 47.5 Silver per point (opposite 2 gold per point) when patch 4.0.3 goes live. BashiokThe previous conversion rate was intended to discourage Frost and triumph to devalue some amount of agriculture and hoarding of points before converting a bit but then we concluded, no matter what we do people that agriculture would be significantly above the Softcap came, and we should not try to do it harder for you.

The queue: Getting ready for exploits output

Welcome back in the queue, WoW Insider's daily Q & A column that Warcraft WoW Insider team answer the world where your questions about. Mat McCurley will be your host.

Hey, I'm back! Alex Debt. Yesterday in cataclysm beta for testing exploits opened. Tonight begins the epic quest destroyed at absolutely by these dungeons! Wednesday, Thursday, Wednesday! It comes, is all. Witness the horror, trials and tribulations of brave souls! Slaughter in the stone core! The battle in Black Crag cave! Throne of this... the quite literal deadmines! Hellish halls of origination. A grim Batol really! UH... Culling Vortex pinna...?What do you want from me? it's early.

Enough davon.Let's get to some questions.

There are some Cataclysm-spoilers in a few the queue issues this week, so be careful if you avoid this kind of thing are.

snowleopard233 asked:

Will we ever see how automatic group Finder for raids as we for exploits have a? I know raiding is ideal with guilds, but sometimes I just really need to find a tank for the 10-man weekly without to spam on the General Chat for one hour.

Personally, I don't think I would want to see this. Dungeons and exploits meaning-the maximum amount of time you spend with a pickup group is an hour tops.Raids a random have gone so many different levels, together with a much stricter lockout period incorrectly for a week, as opposed to just always from a Dungeon locked for a day lockable could raids are for anything other than the dungeons and are therefore differently treated.

Aracross asked:

Why is Garrus in the background of the Web?

The calibrations for URL conversion has done Garrus.Give it some time. He has a lot on his plate.

Woshiernog asked:

People deal with the wrong dates. The real question is if the cataclysm trailer is coming out. So when it comes out?

Amen, brother.I can't wait to see the trailer, for cataclysm have the contemplative villain herausziehen.Wir-trailers, had, so I we get something as melodramatic rates cinematic as wrath ' see expect some action. My guess is that we will see it at BlizzCon or at the end of September.

This question forced me to go back and see all the cinematic openings for world of Warcraft and the extensions, and I'm impressed every time. The cataclysm trailer can't come soon enough.

JR asked:

The draenei launch area takes place, right after the Exodar crashed and the abandoned area takes place, as share Sylvanas ab.Haben has been revised from the Lich King control undead these two areas in Cata? Are you set in the past?

I popped on beta for a few minutes and a draenei, and I didn't see anything else except the new voice over introduction. The undead are another story entirely.Spoiler ahead.

Previously, you would awake as a newly broken free undead finally overdue freely of the Lich King halten.Jetzt, things have a fresh undead geändert.Als in a shallow grave newly in the Undeath by Sylvanas ' val wake ' kyr gestiegen.Sie be said that no slave of Sylvanas, but if you decide to follow, things are pretty big sein.Dann, to help, have risen that newly undead from its shock and stupor commissioned will suffice it to say gestiegen.Es, is this a very, very interesting new start of forsaken players.

Daae asked:

Starts the death Knight to level 55? it would be cool if it changed so you see all the new cataclysm content as a DK KönnenIch think in level 1, there are some lore reason to start you at 55.

I'm pretty sure that death Knight always at level 55 will start, because that's how your entire unique opening selected.press are still technically a "Heroes" class, and I wouldn't be surprised, is that the type of the class additions, we receive from here on out.

Starting at the stage 55, the reward for playing a hero Klasse.Sie is pretty much your death Knight slot saw already the early levels, probably on another character-so congratulations to unlock, you've got it again tun.Cataclysm fixes this largely, with different leveling paths for characters. Breakfast topic: what offers from other games would be fun in WoW?

by Brian Cutaia Sep 22nd 2010 at 8: 00 pm this breakfast has topic was brought to you by seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words on our site.

Let's face it: we all need occasionally erupt from WoW in our gaming rotation. My recent burglary sent me play a little something called Super Mario Galaxy 2 of the computer Chair on the couch. Now, of course world of Warcraft is nicht-- and are ever - nothing close, at a platformer. Sure, there are some similarities, but if history is any guide, only cause frustration too much platforming in the land of Azeroth. With one of your party members Miss "jump" into wailing Caverns is always a toe tapping exercise in patience.Check out bright, if proof that your average MMO players not good in art of the platforming versed, imagine Naxxramas.Wenn I a nickel for every time I saw players to eat the mucus during Frogger the PvP pipe fall or stumble their left feet in Heigan's - Dance - Studio... well, let's just say, I had a nice nickel collection.

But if I do, as only a moment, the world of Warcraft, developed exclusively for my own personal entertainment, I think I a lot of odd mechanics in raids too shake things would include. Messed up gravity. Interesting jump puzzles over bottomless pits. Water levels!Just imagine how much would change the feel of a Dungeon if only you the right zone-wide buff einschließen.Polieren you had, until the monster, give all players a 100% haste and run speed buff and see only things to get the chaotic. Oh, yeah-- and the soil behind you slowly falls way...

Of course, if these things in the game have been implemented, it would be the beginning of the end for Blizzard. These are simply weird ideas; I am aware of that. The the point is though — we've all had an idea that we think would be ridiculous to try fun although it is incredibly impractical.

If you had your way, you would steal what bits and pieces own personal version of WoW from other genres for your? you have somehow "brilliant" everyone's favorite MMO an awesome FPS or RTS to make?Tags:Facebookfeed, Game discussion, Gamer discussion, Kresh, Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, World of Warcraft discussion, World of Warcraft themes, Wow discussion, Wow hot topics, Wow problems, Wow topics
